It was a heavy day.

The rains had come again in the night, causing the mossy forest floor, coated with mulch and other such natural things, to give gross sounding squelches when stepped on in just the right way. If one was careful, stepping lightly and lowering their weight from limb to limb with delicacy, one might escape having too much murky refuse burble up between their toes, the gentle application of weight causing it to spread into the sod around it, instead of being forced upwards against the pull of gravity.

Water droplets lay heavy upon the overhanging leaves, the rainwater collected in the humidity and occasionally dripping to the forest floor, coating the mossy stones and continuous undergrowth with liquid. Birds hopped to and fro, pecking at the wet soil for insects unveiled by the rains.

There was a rustle off to the side, large fern fronds being pulled by some form that brushed along them before flinging back to their original states, water flicking into the air. They quivered lightly in the air as the birds took flight with shrieks of alarm. After a fluttering of wings, the forest fell once more into a bog-ish trance.

A curious nose poked it's way from beneath a low growing fern, twitching as it scented the air. Moments passed, and a small, fat little mammal shuffled its way forwards, its movement almost describable as skittering but for it's voluminous figure. It snuffled at the ground, tiny, clawed paws turning over pebbles and shuffling around for something to eat.

The large fern rustled once more, though to a far lesser degree. The small mammal reared up on its hind legs, refuse clutched in its little paws as it cast a weary eye to the rustling plant. It stopped.

Probably just a bird.

It tried to believe that as it went back to sorting through the mulch of the forest floor.

Had it spared but a moment's more glance to the fern, it may have noticed how orange eyes peered out from beneath the large fronds. How, if one tilted their head just so, they may have seen the outline of a form much larger than the small vole, perhaps even the trace whispers of a paw's silhouette.

There was near silence as the vole continued to skitter from place to place, clambering from rock to mushroom to fern as it searched for its next meal. Muscles shifted as the form beneath the form readied itself, forcing the tension to release before the fibers of its strength re-wound themselves to be ready to pounce.

The vole raised a seed to its mouth.

And suddenly, there was a flash as though the earth itself had given birth to a creature made of its soil.

Water droplets were flung from the fern, showering the area in a spray of life-giving liquid, at the same time as a single drop of blood splattered to the ground.

The vole didn't even have time to realize its fate before its skull was crushed in the maw of it's hunter, and the wolf quickly tossed his head back, swallowing the morsel down before any more of it escaped his jaws to drip to the ground below. A lump traveled from his throat to his chest, disappearing into his torso.

A satisfied sigh was soft upon the humid air as the man lowered his head back to a normal elevation, shaking his pelt out as his tongue ran about his lips, catching the few stray droplets of his meal that had tried to escape. Small flicks of water were flung away from him, the moisture that had fallen and then clung to his form as he hid beneath the fern.

Hardly the largest of meals, but it was still nothing to scoff at. A snack to dull the rumblings of hunger in his belly.

Meat was meat, after all, and even a morsel such as this would do until he could track down something better, or perhaps mooch off of someone else's catch if they were willing to share.

OOC: All welcome thread with Auru! He was just out and about, catching a few snacks to munch on. Who knows what'll happen, but feel free to hop in!

“Well done, hunter. It seems your talent exceeded my expectation of you.”

A sly and beguiling voice slithered into the depths of the mossy territory. It seemed to permeate the foliage, curling like smoke before dissipating once more. From the ground, it might have been difficult to tell exactly who or where the words came from. There was only one indication that someone was actually there and not an apparition instead. That sole indicator was glowing green eyes against brown tree bark. And those green eyes belonged to none other than the one called Envy. There was no mistaking that one for anyone else. Ever.

“I have been expecting you, oh mighty wolf,” the Lyger said. There was a special emphasis on the last word, signaling humor on the woman’s mannerisms and inflections. There was a darkness and enigmatic quality to the humor, but it was still apparent. It was not until one looked up and around could they see the ebony female perched high in the treetops. Envy had made herself quite at home in a tree, resting several feet above the male with a grin on her face. The amount of time she had been there was undefined, and the purpose of a loner’s visit in a pack’s homestead was unknown to most. But there she was. This was risky business no doubt. Especially with her just showing up uninvited like she did. But it was a risk that the Lyger was obviously will to make. There just had to be a reason for it though.

There was no fear in the wolf’s body, for she lay on her back in a luxuriously lackadaisical manner. Her frame seemed to melt like chocolate over the branches where she was laying. A wide yawn escaped her maw before she turned on her stomach and rested it on her paws. Envy’s thin, black lips seemed perpetually formed into a soft grin from there, like she had a joke to tell that no one else had heard before. She was testing Auru, taunting him already. And anyone who had known the female for any amount of time should expect nothing less from her.

When she was ready to get down from the tree, Envy’s body stretched downward against the tree. In this position, she was poising her paws to catch her fall and her body to follow thereafter. Her claws extended for traction, and the female wolf leapt from the tree, leaving claw marks in her wake. Envy landed on the ground gracefully, completely disregarding the squishiness between her toes. Being part jungle cat made her used to things like that. It did not bother her in the slightest, not one bit. When Envy landed she immediately moved into motion. It was not a hurried movement, but rather a smooth and fluid one. It did not take a lot of time for her to close the gap between the two of them though.

The black wolf came within a few steps of her male counterpart, almost slithering around him before stopping in front of him. It was obvious that her intentions were still not clear; she was taking her time disclosing any details whatsoever. Why rush? She had all the time in the world that she needed. Surely she was much scarier than anything that this land could produce, many times over.

“So tell me, Wolf, what now plagues the mind of a prosperous man like you? If he has the whole world in the palm of his paw, what more could he want? Hmmm? What is it that satisfies his heart?”

A scream resounded through the clearing.

It looked like something had launched a clump of soil into the air as the man shot straight into the air, fur on end. The brown man almost looked like a cat as he was spooked, eyes blown wide as every inch of him seemed to be stricken with terror.

His stiff form hit the ground with an uncomfortable thud, muddy water squelching around the thick-furred man. Clumps of the hairs were bound together and made heavy by the liquid. Ignoring the dull throbbing that began in his shoulder from his uncomfortable hit (was there some sort of stone under the dirt?), the brown man scrabbled for purchase upon the wet ground, trying desperately to get to his paws.

Pelt mussed, some of the fur wet, sticking up in different directions, a small clump of wet soil dripping to the ground beneath him. A brown head swung to and fro as though on a pivet, copper eyes opened wide like searchlights on a foggy night.

In the midst of the mossy clearing, the brown man turned in place. His head swung about, searching for the origin of the voice. Who was there? He didn't recognize her voice. At least, he thought it was a her. It sure sounded like a her. But you could never really be sure. Oh gods, was it a man? Oh gods, oh gods. He didn't recognize this stranger's voice. An invader? Oh gods he wasn't equipped to deal with an invader! He was the Shaman!

The brown man felt the hairs of his tail brushing against his hind legs, feeling as the appendage tucked itself beneath him in terror. Oh gods, oh gods. He was out here all alone...

"I have been expecting you, oh mighty wolf."

There was a muffled squeak of terror as ears pricked upon the brown man's crown, still instinctively searching out the origin of the woman's voice despite his fear. Expecting him? Oh gods was someone stalking him? Or was this an invader to the pack, trying to single them out and pick them off one by one? Oh gods was he the first target? Oh gods!

His ears directed him to peer upwards, and his gaze came to rest equally with that of a-... cat's? No, wait. Lyger. Woman? Maybe? Couldn't tell. Pretty sure. Not completely.

...

Maybe.

She was lounging contentedly upon a tree branch above him, clearly displaying dominance in her casualness and relaxation. He felt the fur upon his chest brush against the forest floor as he lowered himself with trepidation. He whimpered softly in the back of his throat, eyes wide as a child's as he peered up at her.

She shifted her position, flexing her body against the tree as she made to take a stance before him. The brown man eyed the musculature of her form with a small tremor of nerves coursing down his spine.

Claw marks marked her path.

Oh gods.

She appeared to saunter up towards him as he huddled against the soil, body still tense with fear. Nothing seemed to bother her in the slightest. Not the wetness of the soil nor the heaviness of Evergreen scent that hung in the air around them. The scent that she clearly did not belong to.

She seemed to not care in the slightest about her casual invasion of a pack's territory.

Oh gods.

She was close enough that he could reach out and touch her.

Oh gods.

"So tell me, Wolf, what now plagues the mind of a prosperous man like you? If he has the whole world in the palm of his paw, what more could he want? Hmmm? What is it that satisfies his heart?”

Prosperous? Whole world? Satisfies his heart?

What in all of the gods name was this woman talking about? Didn't she realize that she was invading a pack's territory? What was she doing asking him philosophical questions?

He felt the flesh of his underside pressed against the wet soil as he had completely laid down upon the ground. His tail was still tucked between his legs, pressing against his underside. His head was held low, lower jaw brushing the wetness of the ground.

His eyes peered up at the cat-like woman who now towered above him from his place on the ground. His voice just barely managed to whisper it's way from his throat as a weak murmur.

"What-What are you talking about? Who... who are you?"

His heart fluttered against his ribs like a frantic butterfly trying to escape it's cocoon. What was this strange woman doing here?

(He probably shouldn't have been so cowed in this situation, she was the one in the wrong here. But she was also the one with the strength, the claws, and the confidence to use them to rend him limb from limb. In the wrong she may have been, the advantage she still had.)

OOC: Auru is a ball of anxiety and fear.

From her perch above, Envy watched the reaction that she elicited from poor Auru, and he outright screamed. This was not the intended effect that Envy had planned, but the brown male screamed anyways. Very loudly. And that made it all the better than she pictured. The Lyger watched as the male wolf sprung from the ground, landing roughly thereafter in the same spot. The intention was not to scare or hurt the man initially, only to spark his curiosity in a different way than usual, but it was evident that Envy did. It was too easy to walk up to him, introduce herself, have small talk, and then walk away again. How boring was that though? That form of engagement had long become cliché to her. Envy’s entrance was clearly more overwhelming and dramatic than that. How exciting it was to her. In the future, she might start doing things in this manner more often. It could potentially work to her advantage.

A teeny, tiny, minute fraction of the female felt bad for the fellow honestly. But it was much too small to persuade her to agonize over it all. She practically fed off of things like this and would not lose an ounce of sleep over it. Other animals’ sad demeanors and misfortunes intoxicated the wolf for whatever reason. There was really no explanation for why this was at all. Envy’s family was composed of normal, happy wolves. Trauma had not shaped Envy to become the creature that she was or anything. Her childhood and adult life were simple times and quiet overall. Envy merely just was this way because she was. End of story.

The closer that the hybrid female got, the worse off the male wolf seemed to be. She could see him cower lower and lower to the ground and hear his squeaks in her rounded ears. Envy stood above Auru for a moment, green eyes just blinking thoughtfully at him. There were two paths that she could take with the slightly younger wolf. She could torment him, play with his weaknesses, and break him into helpless shambles at her paws. That probably would not take much effort. The second path Envy could choose would be to help the lad, strengthen him, and lift him up again. But which would she choose? Maybe there could be a third option with a little bit of both? Yes, maybe that would do as well.

Envy listened to the Auru’s stammering without answering his questions at first. They would all be answered in good time. She came down to his level so that her green eyes attempted to look into his copper ones. “Perhaps I was wrong again in my estimation of you. You are not a hunter at all, are you? They do not behave in this way, sniveling and whatnot. You are more like the ones being hunted. A Vole for example. The fear of the unknown is what consumes them. Teeth are just the final blow.” The leopard wolf then placed a paw near Auru’s chin, trying to right him on his paws by gently lifting it up. “Stand, you are worth more than this miserable existence. I am Envy, your new protector.”

When she removed her paw from near his face, Envy tried to draw the water and muck off of Auru simultaneously. Envy primarily was all about something else when she arrived in these lands, but apparently her motives had shifted. There was something more pressing at paw. She would never apologize for her actions that scared Auru in the tree. But protecting him was pretty darn close.

OOC - So basically Envy went from trying to scare the snot out of him, to designating herself as his bodyguard XD
